Remake of 2000 film 'Ditto' features different dialogue, themes
By Kwak Yeon-soo
Yeo Jin-goo, who is returning to the big screen after five years with time travel-romance film "Ditto," said he has always wanted to do a romantic comedy while he is still in his 20s.
"I had been filming heavy material, mainly portraying mature and serious characters. I wanted to try fun, lighthearted acting roles and include romance in my filmography while I'm in my 20s," the 25-year-old said during a press conference for the film, Monday.
"I grew up watching movies set in the 1990s and 2000s, and the 90s rom-coms were always so enjoyable and heartwarming that they even made me envious of the older generation."
"Ditto" is a remake of the 2000 fantasy romance of the same title about two college students living in different eras who are able to communicate with each other using an old radio following a lunar eclipse. It involves a blend of fantasy, romance and drama.
Yeo plays Yong, a mechanical engineering student living in 1999. Cho Yi-hyun, who shot to fame with the Netflix series "All of Us Are Dead," takes on the role of Moo-nee, a sociology student living in 2022.
Cho, who decided to join the project immediately after reading the script, said, "I've been longing to star in films or series that are warm and uplifting. Then I came across the script for 'Ditto' and immediately fell in love with it."
She explained that she felt no pressure, but wanted to do a good job on the remake of the 2000 film, which starred Yoo Ji-tae and Kim Ha-neul. "The director made some dramatic changes in the setting, dialogue and theme that really took us down a different route," Cho said.
Na In-woo, who appears as Moo-nee's love interest Young-ji, said working with Cho was a "quick bonding experience" as they tried to figure out their characters together.
"We quickly became friends after playing games together," he said, adding that he chose "Ditto" because it seemed the perfect thing for audiences who need a break from a culture of busyness.
"We have a lot of things going on in the world and everybody seems to be so busy these days. I'm sure that our uplifting film could give you a perfect escape movie experience," he said.
"Ditto" will hit local theaters, Nov. 16.
