A funeral was held on Sunday for an eight-year-old boy killed by a bus in front of his school in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, last week.
The vehicle carrying his body was flanked by almost 300 people ― school friends and parents ― when it stopped by the school during the funeral procession. They waved white handkerchiefs at the vehicle as a show of grief. The parents couldn't stop crying during the funeral.
The incident happened on May 10 when a city bus struck Cho Eun-gyeol at a crosswalk in front of the school. The boy had right of way as the crosswalk signal was green, and the bus drove through to make an illegal right turn reportedly without seeing the boy.
The driver was apprehended immediately. Police tested him but they didn't find any alcohol in his blood.
Under the current law, violators of school zone traffic regulations can face up to life imprisonment if they kill a pedestrian.
Separately, the victim's father filed an online petition to the National Assembly, calling for additional school zone regulations to prevent additional deaths from happening.
