Captured
Conservatives across advanced democracies share a similar ideology. They believe in “less government,” smaller social safety nets, neoliberal economic policies, and are hostile to workers' rights while fetishizing concentrated wealth and free markets. But no conservative political party in any democratic country is as radical and unhinged as the American Republicans (henceforth called the GOP, or “Grand Old Party”).

Whiteness and COVID-19
COVID-19, as deadly and crippling as it can be, provided, and indeed is providing, an important trove of information by which we can measure the scourge of white supremacist imperialism and the lethal consequences thereof.

A lesson for Xi
Russian President Vladimir Putin thought his modernized military would make quick work of Ukraine, since Russia has better military technology and more troops at its disposal than its smaller neighbor. He thought he could topple the democratically-elected Ukrainian government and install a puppet regime loyal to the Kremlin.

Putin's gambit
“The fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelenskyy, rejecting the international community's offer of helping him flee Ukraine at the onset of the Russian invasion.

Why conservatives win
Particularly in Europe, the 20th century is replete with cases where conservative elites - so bent on maintaining their grip on political power - backed rightist, populist demagogues.

Goodbye, democracy?
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, during the formal impeachment of then U.S. President Donald Trump, rehashed a famous quote of our founding fathers: “On the final day of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, when our Constitution was adopted, Americans gathered on the steps of Independence Hall...They (really it was the politically astute socialite Elizabeth Willing Powel of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) asked Benjamin Franklin, 'What do we have, a republic or a monarchy?' Franklin replied, 'A republic, if you can keep it.' Our responsibility is to keep it.”

Sensitive China
China has a long and rich history. Technologically, scholarly, and governing-wise, China was 500 years ahead of most of the ancient world. Single-sheet paper, mechanical clocks, gunpowder, guns, fireworks, and long works of literature were all invented or perfected there.

Korea and Taiwan
Korea and Taiwan share a lot of similarities. Both countries experienced dictatorial regimes for decades. Both countries were brutally occupied by foreign powers, specifically but not exclusively, Imperial Japan. Both countries are beset by dangerous and intractable enemies. Korea has to contend with North Korea, and Taiwan has to combat an increasingly aggressive China. They both experienced hardships, yet turned their countries into advanced, democratic, economic powerhouses, with advanced technology - especially electronics and computer chips. Taiwan is the leader in advanced computer chi...

New blood
I wrote before that sometimes, experienced, older politicians like Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and current U.S. President Joseph Biden are more effective at running the federal government, setting political agendas, and passing meaningful legislation.

Double standards
Recently, I wrote on Jay Park about his controversial music video: displaying guns, tattoos, and the usual tropes and stereotypes too many people associate with being a black American. I argued that the bigger problem was not cultural appropriation, as much as a reductive, narrow, boring, uncreative imagining of black American life.
