Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong met with Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, Monday, to discuss ways to cooperate in the semiconductor field.
According to Samsung Electronics, Lee met Gelsinger at Samsung Electronics' headquarters in Seoul. The two had dinner together after discussing ways to cooperate in semiconductor supply.
The two mainly discussed ways to enhance cooperation related to next-generation memory, fabless production, system semiconductors, and foundries.
The meeting is said to have been largely influenced by U.S. President Joe Biden's visit to Samsung Electronics' Pyeongtaek semiconductor plant with President Yoon Suk-yeol last week. During the visit, Biden expressed his will to forge a bilateral semiconductor alliance. Samsung Electronics and Intel are the leading players in the semiconductor industry in each country.
Samsung Electronics and Intel are rival companies competing for the first and second places in sales in the global semiconductor market. Although they are competitors, the two companies are highly dependent on each other.
In the DRAM market, where Samsung Electronics maintains the No. 1 position, compatibility with Intel's CPU, which serves as the brain of a computer, is important in developing next-generation memory products such as DDR5 for PCs and servers and LPDDR6 for mobile devices. Intel leads the world in the CPU market with its advanced technology.
