POSCO, the country's leading steel company, has been recognized as a Steel Sustainability Champion at the World Steel Association's semi-annual member meeting held in Vienna, Austria, on April 18 (local time). This marks the second consecutive year that POSCO has been recognized as a Steel Sustainability Champion.
The World Steel Association selects Steel Sustainability Champions annually from its pool of 140 member companies, honoring those leading the steel industry in carbon neutrality and environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) principles since 2018.
To qualify as a Steel Sustainability Champion, companies must meet four criteria: recognition as an outstanding sustainability member, nomination as a finalist for the Steelie Awards, publication of a sustainability report and submission of sustainability data and Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) information.
POSCO not only fulfilled all four criteria but also earned acclaim for its efforts in ESG management, including the collaborative development of hydrogen reduction steelmaking, a carbon neutrality pledge for 2050, and the establishment of a robust governance structure. Such achievements have cemented POSCO's position as a Steel Sustainability Champion for two consecutive years.
"We have swiftly responded to the demands of carbon neutrality and ESG management to overcome the climate crisis." POSCO Group Chairman Choi Jeong-woo said. "Leveraging the challenge of carbon neutrality as a catalyst, we will solidify our position as a leading environmentally conscious future materials company, supporting sustainable growth as a century-old enterprise."
Additionally, Kim Kwan-hyeong, an employee at the iron-making department of POSCO's Gwangyang Steelworks, secured second place in SteelChallenge-17, a steelmaking process competition organized by the World Steel Association on April 18. The annual event, launched in 2005, offers steel engineers worldwide an opportunity to simulate cost-effective steel production within given parameters and time constraints.
