POSCO Group Chairman Choi Jeong-woo visited JSW Steel's headquarters in Mumbai on Sunday and met with company Chairman Sajjan Jindal to discuss ways to cooperate in eco-friendly steel technology, company officials said Tuesday. Choi also visited JSW Steel's plant in Vijayanagar, southern India.
Choi's visit to India was made in response to Jindal's visit to Korea last November and in gratitude for his help in restoring POSCO's steel mill in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, when it was affected by a flood caused by Typhoon Hinnamnor last September.
"At the time of the restoration work for our steel mill that was hit by Typhoon Hinnamnor, Chairman Jindal gave POSCO the facilities that were being manufactured for the JSW hot-rolled products plant, which helped us greatly," Choi said.
The JSW Steel chairman said he looks forward to expanding the partnership between the two companies.
The two leaders also discussed comprehensive cooperation in future growth projects, including carbon neutrality, hydrogen and second battery materials as well as their traditional business partnership in steel technology and materials purchases.
POSCO is considering India, which is known as an optimal place for renewable energy and green hydrogen production, as a candidate for its hot briquette iron (HBI) production site for hydrogen reduction steel. HBI refers to a processed product of reduced iron that is molded into a shell shape after removing oxygen from iron ore.
JSW Steel is also much interested in HyREX, POSCO's unique hydrogen reduction steel technology. HyREX is a hydrogen-reduced steel technology based on POSCO's distinguished FINEX flow reactor technology.
Choi also visited major business sites in India, including POSCO Maharashtra, a cold-rolled production corporation, to check its management status and encourage executives and employees.
